Where do I start?
I need to ask a lot of questions because you will already know your preferences. For example, if you were choosing a jumper, how the sleeves join the main bit of the jumper vary quite a lot. You can have:-
- Dropped sleeves
- Raglan sleeves
- Set in sleeves
- Saddle shoulders
So please contact me and let me know what you want knitted. I will then send you a form with some questions (or if you prefer, ask me to telephone you to talk over the project). I live in Essex and spend a lot of time also in Hertfordshire, so if you are near me it is possible to arrange to meet, otherwise your item will be posted to you.
How long does it take?
When you place your order you will be advised how long it will take. Some items can be more complicated – for example if they have cables or beading – but usually within two weeks.
What will it cost?
The price is based on the weight of the garment. The cost of buttons or a zip is added and then a little bit extra for my time to design and knit your item.
It all depends on the yarn you choose. Acrylic is the cheapest, man-made yarn, and of course it is ideal for babies where a lot of washing and quick drying is needed. However, you might prefer natural yarns such as cotton for a new baby.
Babies clothes tend to be less than £10
Ladies jumpers & cardigans are typically around £20 – £25 unless you have chosen a very exotic yarn and expensive buttons – one I did last year was worth £80.
A cushion cover will be around £7.50
Men’s jumpers/cardigans up to Aran weight are around £45.
Have you been watching The Great British Sewing Bee? There are a lot of similarities between dress making and machine knitwear and the preparation is important for a good design that fits.
How do I pay?
I have a Paypal account. You can use https://www.paypal.me/PamelaHatswell
You can decide to buy your own yarn and buttons, or you can instruct me to buy this for you in which case I ask for a deposit and then a final payment when your item is finished.
I have never had something knitted for me before
You might like me to send you a “sample”. This is a small square using the yarn you have chosen and it gives you the chance to see and feel the texture first before the item is knitted. Ask for a sample if this would reassure you.
What about washing instructions?
Your item will be sent with full instructions of how to care for it and washing instructions. If you need to be able to machine wash your item do say this at the beginning because there are some yarns that have to be hand washed or dry cleaned.
